Do transits always manifest as conscious experiences, or can their effects happen "behind the scenes"?

I've been reflecting on the mechanics of transits and wanted to get everyone's take on how they manifest, specifically regarding our awareness of them.

Do transits represent the energy we ourselves feel or do they show the objective events that personally concern us and influence our life, even if sometimes we aren't aware of them, or they're happening behind our back?
