Saturday Night Beatlemania Attitude Dance Celebrating the 2024 Birthday of Rocking Songbird Sir Paul McCartney

by Robert Wilkinson

Today we send up a big Happy 82nd Birthday to one of the world's musical treasures, Paul McCartney. Gear Fab! We begin the party early!

Paul McCartney (18 June 1942) has given us some of the most memorable love songs in history (rockers too!), and is living proof that those who said the Beatles were a "flash in the pan" and would be forgotten within a few years were impossibly wrongheaded contrarians. And he's still rocking! Today I've dug up a few things that may entertain you, so enjoy!

Part of one of the greatest songwriting teams in history, he was central to the first global broadcast for peace, and even before that was one of the "godfathers" of the first major pop festival in history, the iconic "Summer of Love" gathering at Monterey filmed by the legendary D.A. Pennebaker of Don't Look Back fame. Without Sir Paul's input, we in America may never have had the magical tours of Jimi Hendrix and the Who in 1967-68, or heard of Ravi Shankar and so many other musical immortals of our times.

To give you a sense of what was up when Sir Paul hit the ground running, here’s a great intro! From the beginning of Beatlemania, in December 1963, the Beatles live on “It’s the Beatles” giving the world what they did best!

”I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Money,” and “Twist and Shout.”

Also from 1963, on the Morecambe television show, the Beatles live performing “This Boy,” “All My Loving,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” plus a barbershop quartet gag number at the end

Here they are, very live at the 1964 NME performing ”She Loves You,” “You Can’t Do That,” “Twist and Shout,” “Long Tall Sally,” and “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

I found this gem! It’s the very first mention of the Beatlemania on US news. From the Nov 18, 1963, Edwin Newman did this segment on The Huntley-Brinkley Report. Beatlemania First Reported on US television

Most don’t know it, but Jack Paar on The Tonight Show featured a performance clip before their Ed Sullivan appearance. For a taste of early Beatlemania, The Beatles In France 1964 plus the Jack Paar Tonight Show Beatles Appearance (Sorry the quality of the clip is poor, but it’s the only one out there this year.)

I found a few clips this year of their historic appearances The Ed Sullivan Show! From their first appearance on February 9 (I saw this on tv and it blew my mind!) “I Saw Her Standing There” has disappeared but we still have “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”.

Next week they performed “She Loves You,” “This Boy,” “All My Lovin’,” “I Saw Standing There” “From Me to You” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” Then on February 23, they broadcast this performance which had been taped two weeks earlier of “Twist and Shout.”

Here’s a strange 8 minute clip that’s part of a larger show titled Around The Beatles in 1964 – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

I found it again! Here’s the medley of hits from Around the Beatles in 1964. For your enjoyment, Around The Beatles 1964 – “Love Me Do,” “Please Please Me,” “From Me to You,” “She Loves You,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand”

This randomly named clip has some of the footage from that show! Around The Beatles 1964 – Vol 8

Here’s the entire 52 minute show! Around The Beatles 1964

Last year I had both videos from their 1964 Melbourne appearance, but part 1 is nowhere to be found this year. The Beatles Live in Melbourne - Part 2

The 24 minute live video performance from Adelaide, Australia in 1964 has disappeared. However, I found this 30 minute audio clip from the Adelaide show, and they’re as tight as any band could ever be. Harmonies are perfect, and all in all, it’s a great atmosphere!

The Beatles in Adelaide - 1964 (“I Saw Her Standing There,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand ,” “All My Loving,” “She Loves You,” “Till There Was You,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “This Boy,” “Twist and Shout,” “Long Tall Sally.”)

Here’s the 26 minute clip of their Melbourne concert with some others in 1964. "The Beatles in Australia 1964" ("You Can't Do That," “All My Loving,” "She Loves You," "Can't Buy Me Love," “Twist and Shout,” "Long Tall Sally,” “Till There Was You,” "Roll Over Beethoven," "This Boy," "I Saw Her Standing There.")

The 30 minute clip of them at the Hollywood Bowl in 1964 has disappeared.

From the same tour from a different source featuring different cities!

”All My Loving,” “She Loves You,” “Things We Said Today,” “Roll Over Beethoven.””Can’t Buy Me Love,” “If I Fell,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”

Here is a great clip from 1964 of The Beatles on Shindig (Set list: “Kansas City/”Hey Hey Hey Hey,” “I’m A Loser,” and “Boys.”)

Here’s 9 minutes of 1964 Ready Steady Go footage of the Beatles performing a medley of “Love Me Do,” “Please Please Me,” “From Me To You,” “She Loves You,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Shout.”

On that show, the Beatles having fun with ”Shout.”

From Blackpool Night Out in August 1965, The Beatles live in a great 17 minute set! It's supposedly one of the first, or the first, time "Yesterday" was performed live on stage.

"I Feel Fine," "I'm Down," "Act Naturally," "Ticket To Ride," "Yesterday," "Help!"

From 1966, the Beatles in Germany live and rocking out showing why they were the greatest rock and roll band in the world then! "Rock and Roll Music," "Baby's In Black," "I Feel Fine," "Yesterday," "Nowhere Man" (AWESOME harmonies!), and "I'm Down."

Here's a rare obscurity toward the end of his time with the Beatles. It's a jam, with Paul on organ, George on guitar, John on bass, and Ringo on drums doing a very "Grateful Dead-ish" noodle supposedly "written" by Paul. For your enjoyment, "The Palace of the King of the Birds"

We'll leave his Beatle years with an hour an 18 of The Beatles at the Star Club - 1962 (The strange vocals on tracks 1 & 3 were by the guys who ran the Star Club).

A Brief Interlude

Before we move into the next phase of his career, these two clips are an amazing reproduction, note for note, of two of the Beatles' most loved tunes from the Sgt. Pepper era! For your enjoyment, an exquisite performance by “the Beatles’ Magical Orchestra” conducted by my friend, the Maestro David Amram. Even though these weren’t written by Paul, it’s still a very good tribute!

Here's Paul McCartney's you tube "channel," where you can find a lot of great performance material, his tour schedule, and a lot more!

Last year I had a great 14 minute clip of Sir Paul in NY in 2009 performing “A Day in the Life,” “Give Peace A Chance,” and “Let It Be.” There were also two shorter clips with “Live and Let Die,” “Day Tripper” and “Lady Madonna,” “Get Back,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise),” and “The End” but all of them are gone. So instead, from what I believe is the same show, Good Evening New York, we have 9 videos with Paul cranking out “Back in the USSR,” “I’m Down,” “Something,” “Live and Let Die,” “Hey Jude,” “Day Tripper,” “I Saw Herr Standing There,” “Yesterday,” and “Good Evening New York.” From the same show, “Sgt. Here's a great hour and 26 concert from 1989! The Paul McCartney Get Back Tour - 1989

Going into the wayback machine, here’s a classic! From his 1975 tour, here’s two hours of Wings Over Australia - 1975

Last year I had the entire one hour episode on the Colbert Report featuring Sir Paul, but this year it’s disappeared. So instead, here’s a piece of it! Paul McCartney on the Colbert Report

Here’s Paul’s tune for all of us who celebrate rocking birthdays! From 2008 Kiev, here's Sir Paul doing "Birthday" and from 1990 in Knebworth, the version I send out on FB! "Birthday"

For a slight digression, a gift from Alexei! At the Royal Albert Hall in 1993 Sir Paul teamed up with the legendary Allen Ginsberg and they did a live performance of "A Battle of American Skeletons"

Another trip in the wayback machine brings us to the first two acetates the Beatles ever did as the Quarrymen! First, the Buddy Holly standard "That'll Be The Day," and now the first record ever written and recorded by Paul! This tune was written by Paul and George, and also recorded by the Quarrymen in 1958. For a slice of history, here's "In Spite of All the Danger"

Flash forward to Paul in 1992 at the Ed Sullivan Theater performing “20 Flight Rock.”

Here’s Macca solo on Live from Abbey Road doing "In Spite of All the Danger" and “20 Flight Rock.”

For a last look back, here’s Paul’s 2018 “Surprise concert” at NYC’s Grand Central Terminal featuring nothing but Beatle tunes! For your enjoyment, 54 minutes of pure gold! Paul McCartney in Grand Central Terminal" (Set list: A Hard Day’s Night Can’t Buy Me Love I’ve Got a Feeling From Me to You Love Me Do Blackbird Back in the U.S.S.R. For the closer, a live MTV unplugged video from 1991 of several tunes from way back when, including the very first song Sir Paul ever wrote when he was 14! "I Lost My Little Girl," followed by "Every Night." We move into the beautiful ”And I Love Her," the equally beautiful "Here, There, and Everywhere,” and his hit off of Rubber Soul, "I’ve Just Seen A Face.”

The clip with 23 songs has disappeared, but I found this set of 15 songs! Paul McCartney Unplugged on MTV - 1991

Our first encore comes from The Ed Sullivan Theater in 1992, an entire 56 minute show! Paul McCartney at the Ed Sullivan Theater - 1992

Our second encore features his 2018 album titled Egypt Station which debuted at #1 on the charts! That debut was rolled out with the Grand Central show a few paragraphs up.

Our fourth and last encore features his 2021 album of "reinterpretations, remixes, and covers" which he titled McCartney III Imagined

A very funny 9 minute interview from 1997! Worth your time. Conan Interviews Sir Paul.

And of course, if you want to see more of this musical master when he was "the cute Beatle," you can always check out A Hard Day's Night, still a brilliant piece of film work, and Help, the follow-up Beatles' romp. And then there's something our granddaughters love as a singalong movie, Yellow Submarine....

Here’s done a ton of stuff these past years which I didn’t get to post this year, but if you are interested, check out what this amazing talent is giving the world now via the official Paul McCartney official website Lots of current material from this musical wit!

Thanks for everything, Sir Paul. You changed the world for the better, and that's a very good thing. Thanks for the past, present, and future memories, which are never "almost full."
