Fabulous Friday Celebrating the 2023 Birthday of Wilbury Heartbreaker Tom Petty

by Robert Wilkinson

October 20 would have been Tom Petty’s 73rd birthday. Have fun, since Charlie T. really did have a lot of attitude!

Tom Petty a.k.a. Charlie T. (Muddy) Wilbury (October 20, 1950-Oct 2, 2017) and the Heartbreakers came roaring out of Gainesville, Florida in the mid-70s with such tunes as "American Girl," "Refugee," and "Breakdown," and never looked back. Between then and now, they've sold over 60,000,000 albums and cds. His music is pure American rock and roll at its best! For your enjoyment, Tom Petty!

This is the earliest performance footage I can find. From June 1977 on Rockpalast at the WDR Studios, 44 minutes of early TP&THB! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Live on Rockpalast - 1977

From that show, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – “American Girl”

From their August 1978 appearance on the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test, have fun with this 56 minute performance of Tom at his early best! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Old Grey Whistle Test - 1978

They played at Winterland on December 30, 1978! Here’s the entire hour and 32 show! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Winterland 1978

The next night they went to Santa Monica to play the New Year’s Eve show. This year the 56 minute clip is gone, but I found four songs from that show.

From 1985 at the Wiltern Theater in LA, I found a few great ones! First,

"American Girl."

"Don't Come Around Here No More."

"The Waiting."

"You Got Lucky."

"Breakdown."

From 1985, the very surrealistic "Alice in Wonderland" music video with Tom as the Mad Hatter doing "Don't Come Around Here No More"

From the first Farm Aid Concert in 1985, Tom live doing the Animals’ hit “Don’t Bring Me Down,” followed by "Straight Into Darkness" and "Refugee."

From later in 1986 at Orchard Park, NY, Tom and Bob give us almost 2 hours of great tunes! Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at Farm Aid 1986.

Last year I had the entire 2 hour show in Miami from October 1991 but it’s gone.

Last year I had the entire 90 minute November 1991 show in Oakland on the “Take the Highway Live!” tour on one clip, but this year it’s gone. However, last year I found a bunch from that show, so enjoy!

Some great rare rehearsal footage of Tom with a few greats!! For your enjoyment, 10 minutes of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Roger McGuinn practicing “My Back Pages” for the 1992 30th Anniversary tribute to Lucky Wilbury, aka, Bob Dylan.

Here’s the performance, with 10 of the greatest musicians in rock all sharing a stage in an exquisite offering (complete with lyrics!) of “My Back Pages”

From 1999, a live performance of "Mary Jane's Last Dance"

From "Live at the Fillmore" in San Francisco, March 15 And 16, 1999, I found a great live performance! We begin with Tom and the legendary Bo Diddley doing “Mona”

The entire 1 hour 26 Fillmore show has disappeared, but here’s a link to some of that show, High Grass Dogs: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Fillmore – 1999

Here’s lousy video and great sound in a live 1992 performance in Essen, Germany, of "Into The Great Wide Open." From the same gig, "Learning to Fly."

From the 2002 Concert for George, Tom and the Heartbreakers giving his best to one of my favorite Beatle tunes written by George, “I Need You.” I also found their performance of “Handle With Care” but “Taxman” is still nowhere to be found.

Last year I had the entire 11 minute set on one clip but it’s gone. However, I found this audio only of Tom and the boys performing “Taxman.”

From the closer of that legendary Concert for George, here's Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison, Prince, and others doing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Speaking of having a great backing band, here’s the original music video for “I Won’t Back Down”

At George’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Tom and the Heartbreakers joined with Jeff Lynne to give us THE tune that introduced the world to the Traveling Wilburys, “Handle With Care”

From Soundstage in 2003, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in a fantastic performance of “Handle With Care”

Live from Gatorville in 2006, Tom and Stevie Nicks doing “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and from the same gig, “I Need to Know”

From the same show, “Learning to Fly” and Tom and Stevie doing a duet of "Don't Come Around Here No More."

I also found “I Won’t Back Down” and “Free Fallin’”

From what looks to be the same show, a great performance of “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” followed by "It's Good to Be King" and "You Wreck Me"

A rare find! Tom and Stevie at the Forum in 1981 doing a live duet of the great Searchers' hit from 1964, "Needles and Pins" set to still photos.

In another venue, also live in 2006, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers doing "I Won't Back Down."

Also from 2010, “Good Enough”

From Germany in 2012, a great live performance of "Here Comes My Girl"

From 2008, Tom and the Heartbreakers rocked Super Bowl XLII for 14 minutes with ”An American Girl,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream.”

As a finale in today's birthday celebration, here’s an hour and 56 of everything you could want to hear! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at Bonnaroo 2013

For today's encore, two live performances of a most fitting tune! The first performance comes from June 2008 in Madison Square Garden with Tom and the boys doing the Wilburys' last hit, "End of the Line," and from a few weeks later in Dallas in August doing "End of the Line."

For our second encore, a romp! Here Tom, John Fogerty, and Jackson Brown join the great Randy Newman at Randy’s 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to perform one of my favorite numbers, “I Love L.A.” (And yes, I DO love LA!)

For the third and final encore, Tom’s last show of the 40th Anniversary tour on September 25, 2017, at the Hollywood Bowl. The love is there, the electricity is there, and it’s a truly great way to go out with style! Last year I had the entire 2 hour show, but it’s disappeared. However, I found the last hour and a half of this audience camera footage. For your enjoyment, the very last concert by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Last Show – The Hollywood Bowl

From that show, his last 10 minutes on stage. Ever. From exactly 1 week before he died of cardiac arrest, "You Wreck Me” and “American Girl”

We’ll close this tribute with a real gem! From 1988, for your viewing pleasure, a 24 minute minidocumentary about one of the greatest “supergroups” in the history of music! This year part one is gone, but the rest is history! Welcome to "The True History of the Traveling Wilburys"

Thanks to friend of the site Steve Taylor, we have 42 minutes from the Library of Congress of a 1986 Tom Petty interview! Off the Record With Tom Petty

Thanks for all the great tunes, Charlie T. Now you, Lefty, and Nelson (Spike) have split the building and joined the greatest band in the galaxy. What ya'll did is for the ages! From another who was raised in central Florida in the 50s and 60s, along with the global visitors to this Cosmic Cantina, a big Happy, and may your music ring forever!
