Take Me Home Tonight – Celebrating the 2022 Birthday of Eddie Money

by Robert Wilkinson

Today we get two tickets to Paradise and someone to take us home tonight! Our second show features some great performances by Aries Eddie Money!

Eddie Mahoney, a.k.a. Eddie Money (March 21, 1949 – September 13, 2019) was a singer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was one of the biggest of the late 1970s and 1980s during the MTV era. He had a run of Top 40 hits with such songs as “Baby Hold On,” "Two Tickets to Paradise", "Think I'm in Love", "Shakin'", "Take Me Home Tonight", "I Wanna Go Back", "Walk on Water", and "The Love in Your Eyes". Ex-NYC cop, their loss was Eddie's fame and Ronnie Spector’s gain, since she was in retirement raising kids when Eddie called her to be THE voice on “Take Me Home Tonight,” and the rest is history. For your enjoyment, Eddie Money!

From his first album Eddie Money, his first two hits! This one made it to #11, and is still played somewhere every day! Live on tv in 1977, a young Eddie cranks out “Baby Hold On”

This one, though better known, went to #22. Live on Top Pop in the 70s, Eddie delivering “Two Tickets to Paradise” This live performance is in NY in 1987, so if you prefer, “Two Tickets to Paradise”

From his second album Life for the Taking, this also went to #22. The 1980 Berkeley performance is gone, so instead, here’s the 1979 video performance of “Maybe I’m A Fool”

In 1982, courtesy of his 4th album No Control, he had us rocking and rolling to the #16 “Think I’m in Love” along with the music video for the grinding “Shakin’”

After some down years, he made a monster comeback in 1986 with a tune that revitalized his career AND brought Ronnie Spector back on top of her game. They made an appearance on Solid Gold to promote the great “Take Me Home Tonight” This clip is 2 years later on Letterman, and is a slightly different arrangement which I think I like even more. Even my 4 year old granddaughter was singing along to this one! From Letterman in October 1988 with Paul Schaffer on keyboards, this live performance cooks! “Take Me Home Tonight”

Also on that sixth album Can’t Look Back, two more that charted. First, live in 2010 at BB King’s in Manhattan, “Endless Nights” and here’s the official video for “I Want to Go Back”

He followed those with this Top 10 hit in 1988! Here’s the original music video for “If I Could Walk On Water” and in 1989, "The Love in Your Eyes."

We’ll begin to close this tribute with two early live shows! First, live at the Agoura Ballroom in 1979, here’s 43 minutes of Eddie Money – Live in Ohio 1979

Second, here’s an hour and 7 in SF in 1982. Eddie Money – Live at the Kabuki Ballroom in San Francisco 1982

Our finale is a 58 minute set of Eddie at San Francisco State University in 1975! Eddie Money Live at SFSU - 1975

For the encore, what else? Eddie live in 1987 on tour, backed by a singer who hits Ronnie’s notes on the round! For your enjoyment, “Take Me Home Tonight”
