Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
by Robert Wilkinson Since it’s Christmas Eve it's time to celebrate! Letterman had a tradition going every year on the show featuring the amazing Darlene Love singing one of the most powerful Christmas tunes ever written! If you don't know who Darlene Love is, she was one of Phil Spector's great talents in the "Wall of Sound" era. Just about everybody in the world first heard her HUGE voice on "He's A Rebel, as well as other Crystals songs from that period. Well, she's still going strong! Originally done as part of the Phil Spector Christmas album A Christmas Gift to You, Darlene still performs one of the great Christmas tunes of all time each year, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." It is generally considered the number one rock and roll Christmas song of all time. The original arrangement (linked above) had Leon Russell's genius giving us that amazing piano piece resulting in one of the truly great dramatic crescendos of all time a little over 2 minutes into the song, with Steve Douglas wailing on the sax break. After you're done here, please check out the original! Once Darlene goes into the "Please, please, please, please" part, listen for the piano piece. Simply remarkable! Also featuring the voice of Darlene Love on that amazing album, here's the original studio version of "Winter Wonderland” And now, for your enjoyment as we rock on into Christmas 2019, here is the legendary Darlene Love on Letterman backed by Paul Shaffer and "The World's Most Dangerous Band" doing the original arrangement almost note for note, back in Christmas 2011! Merry Sunday before Christmas Eve, everyone! "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home" Letterman had her performing every year. If you just can't get enough of this tune, I found some previous performances of this great tune! Here’s a treat! It’s the very first time she performed this, back in 1986, looking good and sounding great! "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" Here's the fantastic 2012 version of Darlene Love singing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" on Letterman, and here’s the equally great 2013 performance of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" That woman wails!! (And I've always believed that if I could hear God's voice, it would sound like the late great Barbara Jordan when speaking, but Darlene Love when singing!) Sorry Colbert didn’t continue the tradition, but that’s shew biz! © Copyright 2021 Robert Wilkinson
