If the stars aren’t influencing us, what is?

After searching this sub, a newb like me is now beginning to understand the difference between sidereal / Vedic and tropical / western astrology. I’ve only ever used tropical and it’s always made sense to me, but now that I’ve learned how the signs are no longer connected to the constellations, I’m wondering what is creating the influences we experience in astrology? It makes sense that it would have more to do with the earth’s seasonal rotation around the sun than some eminence from a semi-random grouping of distant stars named after creatures and things on earth said grouping might resemble. Is it that only nearby celestial bodies, like the moon and planets in our solar system, exert influence, while the distant stars actually have pretty much nothing to do with it at all?
