Ending Racism Can Only Be Done By Racists

by Robert Wilkinson I recently saw an ad where a well-meaning person was offering a paid seminar on how to end racism. It spoke of discussing “underlying causes of race related issues” and “developing a consciousness that is loving, forgiving, compassionate, and inclusive.” This seemed peculiar, since those who would consider paying to attend such a series of classes are probably not racists. And I cannot imagine this message resonating with true racists. We all have preferences; that’s a universal fact. It is not “racist” to have a preference. A preference is not necessarily a prejudice, even though preference is present in prejudice. Unconscious biases, identifications, and attachments are present in racism, but to have these also doesn’t necessarily mean one is racist. We all get to like what we like and not like what we don’t like. As we grow in understanding, these are refined by our experiences. Racists as a rule tend to identify with physical distinctions. Those who don't usually aren't racists, regardless of their attachments and assumptions. As we are one race, one love, one Life together, racism is a delusion which only the racist can awaken from. All of us, if we seek a greater life, will inevitably find what we're looking for, even if the forms are temporary. Much of life is about detaching from the distinctions which separate rather than unify. Only a racist can choose not to be racist. Attending classes will not end racism. Talking about systemic racism, white supremacy, and white privilege will NEVER end racism. A racist needs to feel their pain of hating others; reading books and taking on-line classes won’t get that done. While classes can introduce our minds to inspiring thoughts, I have never found the mind “promotes energetic rejuvenation and harmony.” Only by accessing our hearts can we can do these things. Classes merely reinforce our assumption of the primacy of the mind, when only the heart can ever bring these forth. Classes may awaken the mind, but only a direct experience of “heart knowing” can ever create lasting change. Maybe a class can awaken heart knowing, but words only distract from that direct experience. I was moved to leave a comment of my view about ending racism. I wrote it's as simple as remembering there is only one race: the human race. There may be many ethnicities, which only reminds us that genetically we all share countless ancestral genes from all over the world. We all have genes from at least three continents with widely diverse ethnic combinations. Ending racism begins by remembering our common humanity, and the fact that 99.999% of us have one heart, two lungs, one stomach, a large and small intestine, two arms, two legs, 10 fingers, 10 toes, and 7 holes in our head. We all bleed red blood. When it’s time to give or receive blood, no one’s worried about skin color; only the blood type matters. There are only 8 blood types. All of us have one of them. No exceptions. By focusing on our commonality, we decrease attachments to distinctions and experience our Oneness with other humans across space and time. We cannot “end racism” in another. Only they can do that as they awaken to the human condition they share with others, regardless of skin color, ethnicity, or any other superficial distinction. As with all things related to growth from ignorance to awareness and fear into love, it all begins with each of us, here and now, allowing the Love we ARE to come forth in whatever ways we feel are perfect for us. We don’t need a class to do that. We just need to BE the Love are always are, now and forever. © Copyright 2023 Robert Wilkinson
