Saturday Night Attitude Dancing at the 2023 Birthday of Mister Piano Man Billy Joel

by Robert Wilkinson

Billy Joel had a birthday May 9, as well as a “New York attitude,” so he’s our main stage Maestro today and tonight. The music's so good we begin the dance early!

Billy Joel (May 9, 1949) is a consummate pianist, singer-songwriter, and performer. He broke big in 1973 with “Piano Man,” and never looked back! He’s had 33 Top 40 hits, 6 Grammys, and he’s one of the top selling artists of all time with over 150 million out there. He’s in every Hall of Fame he qualifies for, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013, “the nation's highest honor for influencing American culture through the arts.”

His tunes are legendary for their major New York attitude, so enjoy today’s entertainment courtesy of Mister Piano Man, and if you feel like it, get up and dance!

We’ll begin with a major attitude tune featured in past dances! For your enjoyment, Billy’s rockin’ out in his prime live on Long Island with a huge one that went to #24, “Only the Good Die Young”

Back to the beginning, with his first hit! Here’s the original music video of “Piano Man”

From 30 years later at the Tokyo Dome, Billy in 2006 giving tens of thousands a current take on “Piano Man”

Here’s his second song to chart, "The Entertainer," which was a sarcastic response to how much radio stations cut “Piano Man” to fit their playlists. Live in 1976, “The Entertainer”

In 1978 he appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test television show and cranked out these classics! “I Love You Just the Way You Are” and “She’s Always A Woman”

Also from that same Old Grey Whistle Test performance, complete with big hair, “New York State of Mind”

Next, Billy rockin' in a great offering of “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)" and “Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)"

We’ll close with “The Entertainer” and “Only the Good Die Young” (It’s strange to hear this early version, where the organ plays most of the later sax solo parts. The one from NY which began this party earlier wails with the sax out front!)

For some strange reason the first song is blocked in the US. Here’s the rest of the show, which originally ran 45 minutes! Billy Joel on the Old Grey Whistle Test – 1978

From Russia in 1987, a great rocker that went to #1 on the charts, the very danceable ”It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me”

Here’s a great music video of “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me”

From Bremen Germany in 1978, Billy with some pretty big hair giving us his #17 hit “She’s Always A Woman.”

Once he met Phil Ramone, the hits started happening!

Live in Wembley in 1984, Billy live giving us his beautiful #3 hit, “Just The Way You Are”

Live in Long Island in 1982, “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” (Glad I knew you, Sergeant O'Leary...)

Here’s the original studio version of “Movin’ Out”

Here’s the original music video of his #3 hit, “My Life”

Four from Shea live in 2008! We begin with “My Life” and follow up with "Only the Good Die Young." We’ll move into "Captain Jack." and we'll close with his #7 hit, “You May Be Right”

Here’s a great music video of “You May Be Right”

Live in Wembey in 1984, we have four great ones! First, Billy performing what was his next #1, “Tell Her About It.” We now move into a tune Billy wrote as a response to the 4 Seasons’ “Rag Doll” which went to #3 on the charts! Here’s Billy cranking out great versions of “Uptown Girl” and “Big Shot,” which we'll follow with "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." We finish this quartet of iconic tunes from Wembley with Billy’s #14 hit “The Longest Time”

Here’s the entire hour and 45 show! Billy Joel Live at Wembley - 1984

One of his all-time rockers! This is the original 1989 music video of his #1 hit, “We Didn’t Start the Fire”

This clip is one of my favorites! Check out this delivery of his #3 hit from 1993! Live in Frankfurt in 1994, Billy taking us to church with "The River of Dreams." This one makes my feet happy, and in 2014 even my 2 year old granddaughter couldn’t stop dancing to it! I again played the music video of "River of Dreams" for the oldest who is now 8, as well as her 6 year old Venus in Taurus rising sister, and they both started bopping around the room! I guess it’s a winnah!

I found it again! This is beyond awesome. Billy cranks it up at the 1994 Grammys, giving us a stellar performance of "The River of Dreams."

In a smokin’ 2001 performance at the Concert for New York City, “New York State of Mind”

Yankee Stadium erupted when Billy went into this New York celebration! “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)”

Here's a more recent performance from the 121212 Concert For Sandy in New York of "The River of Dreams." From the same show, "Only the Good Die Young."

From his classic 2008 Shea Stadium concert, here’s an utterly fantastic video of “River Of Dreams” and “A Hard Days’ Night”

If you just can't get enough of the piano Master, here’s a full 2 hour show of Billy live at the Tokyo Dome in 2006! Billy Joel Live in Japan - 2006

A real early treat! Here’s 54 minutes of Billy live in 1976! Billy Joel Tonight in Connecticut 1976

Last year, I had one of the best Fallon skits ever done, featuring Billy and Jimmy on The Tonight Show creating the “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” on a tape loop. This year it’s gone.

We'll bring it all home with Billy performing our feature tune at Farm Aid 1985! Enjoy Billy face to face on dual pianos with Randy Newman! Kick it up!! "Only The Good Die Young."

For our encore, Billy giving us a two-fer in Germany in 2016 of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and “The Longest Time.”

For our second encore, Billy and Sir Elton cranking it up on the Leno Tonight Show! “Piano Man” which we’ll follow with their duet of ”Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

For our third and last encore, Billy and the Boss team up in 2009 at MSG to give us an archetypal performance of “New York State of Mind”

Billy’s music has plenty of “New York Attitude,” and they get your feet moving, which is good for the heart! And if you want to know more about where the phrase "Only the Good Die Young" comes from, as well as some of the lyrics to our that tune, by all means check out "Only The Good Die Young."
