Sunday Early Show Celebrating the 2022 Birthdays of Honey Lantree and John McNally

by Robert Wilkinson Our early show features short sets of great music from Great Britain at the height of Beatlemania – and it’s not the Beatles! We begin our show by celebrating the life and work of Honey Lantree (28 August 1943 - 23 December, 2018), the drummer of the Honeycombs! Yes, there was a woman drumming on one of the big hits of 1964, and she held her own in a male dominated era! Joe Meek was their producer, and he hit big in a huge way in 1964 with the Honeycombs’ “Have I The Right” (I always wondered how he got the warble in the sound. This shows he was one of the true innovators of the era!) Live and what looks like lip-synching on tv in 1965, “Have I The Right” Joe Meek also wrote the “B” side to “Have I The Right,” “Please Don’t Pretend Again” and this follow up “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” They also scored with this tune written by Ray Davies of the Kinks, the very dramatic “Something Better Beginning” Here’s their arrangement of the Macca megahit, “Live and Let Die” We’ll close this brief set with a piece of fluff of the Honeycombs lipsynching on Swedish television in January 1965. Yes, that’s Honey singing on “That’s The Way!” “Have I The Right,” “Is It Because,” “That’s the Way,” and “She’s Too Way Out.” ********* Our second short set features the music of the great John McNally (August 30, 1941), who along with Mike Pender founded the Searchers, one of the classic Merseybeat bands! Today we’ll focus on his work in the 60s, though I’m sure there’s a lot of video from his 60 years in show biz! Their first and biggest hit, delivered live on The Ed Sullivan Show in April 1964! In a time when America fell in love with the British Invasion, the legendary “Needles and Pins” Another big one with Mike singing lead delivered live at the NME! “Don’t Throw Your Love Away” They scored big with their remake of the Clovers’ classic hit “Love Potion #9” This went to #2 on the UK charts! “Sugar and Spice” Here’s their Top 20 anti-nuke anthem written by Malvina Reynolds, “What Have They Done To the Rain?” The Searchers also rode this Jackie DeShannon hit to #3 on the UK charts! “When You Walk In the Room.” In this live performance, John’s still cranking out those chiming leads on the 12 string! "When You Walk Into the Room" From that same gig, “Love Potion #9” and of course, “Needles and Pins” For our closer, a very danceable version of P.F. Sloan’s “Take Me For What I’m Worth” For our encore, we'll finish this brief set with their beautiful offering of the Pete Seeger classic “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” © Copyright 2022 Robert Wilkinson
