Trying to understand synastry

If, for example, two people each have venus in a water sign, can they be square to one another? Is it based on the degrees of the sign? The midpoint between the signs?

I understand that signs like pisces and Virgo are in opposition because they are both mutable nocturnal signs. But I don’t really understand squaring planets in synastry.

Diana Garland and Bracha Goldsmith have both youtube channels with multiple 10k followers and used to upload astrology content on a regular basis for years. However they both stopped at some point & we never posted on their platforms anymore!
